Producer description of "Staatsweingut Bad Kreuznach"

The institute in Bad Kreuznach in the German wine-growing region of Nahe was established in 1900 as a teaching and experimental centre of the Prussian Provincial Teaching Institute for the training of winegrowers and the next generation of winegrowers. This then became the "Staatsweingut Bad Kreuznach", owned by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, which is now managed by Rudolf Schunck. The vineyards cover 20 hectares of vines in the single vineyard sites Forst, Hinkelstein, Kahlenberg and Vogelsang (Kreuznach), as well as Kafels (Norheim). They are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling (50%), Silvaner,Pinot Blanc, Müller-Thurgau, Scheurebe and Gewürztraminer, as well as the red wine varieties Pinot Noir, Frühburgunder, Blauer Portugieser, Dornfelder, Domina, Regent and Schwarzriesling (Pinot Meiunier). The Institute has developed the wine-making processes of controlled fermentation and fermentation interruption for the production of residual sweet wines, both under fermentation carbon dioxide pressure. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines and noble brandies (brandy, yeast brandy, marc) are also produced. Wines dating back to the 1920s are stored in the so-called treasure chamber.
