The white grape variety is a new breed between Riesling x Bukettrebe. Synonyms include Alzey S. 88, Dr. Wagnerrebe, Scheu 88, S-88, Scheu Riesling and (used in Austria) Seedling 88. It was created in 1916 by the German breeder Justus Georg Scheu (1879-1949) in Alzey. Even experts can be wrong, as Scheu claimed in a lecture in 1935 that the Bukettrebe had not proven itself as a crossing partner.
The Bukettrebe was only identified in 2012 during DNA analyses, where the variety listed as father variety Silvaner turned out to be incorrect. Initially, it was supposed to be named "Scheu's Favorite"; however, the breeder rejected this and named it Seedling 88 (S-88). In the Third Reich, it was named after the state farmer leader of Hesse-Nassau, Dr. Richard Wagner. After World War II, it was essentially denazified and was again called Seedling 88. It only received its final name after Scheu's death.

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
