The white grape variety is a new variety between Riesling x Bukettrebe. Synonyms are Alzey S. 88, Dr Wagnerrebe, Scheu 88, S-88, Scheu Riesling and (used in Austria) Sämling 88. It was created in 1916 by the German grower Justus Georg Scheu (1879-1949) in Alzey. Even experts can make mistakes, as Scheu claimed in a lecture in 1935 that the Bukett vine had not proven itself as a crossing partner.

The Bukettrebe was only identified in DNA analyses carried out in 2012, which revealed that the Silvaner indicated as the father variety in the breeding list was incorrect. It was initially given the name "Scheu's Liebling" (Scheu's favourite), but grower rejected this and named it Sämling 88 (S-88). During the 3rd Reich, it was named after the Landesbauernführer of Hessen-Nassau, Dr Richard Wagner. After the Second World War, it was de-Nazified, so to speak, and was again called Sämling 88. It only received its final name after Scheu's death.
