The white grape variety originates from France. There are over 50 synonyms that indicate a great age. Some grouped alphabetically by country are Barnawartha Pinot, Hunter River Riesling, Sercial (Australia); Blanc Doux, Chevrier, Colombier, Gros Sémillon, Madeira, Mances Blanc, Marcillac, Mansois Blanc, Monsois Blanc, Oron Sémillon, Saint Émilion, Semilion, Sémillon Blanc, Sémillon Muscat, Sémillon Roux (France); Malaga, Malaga Bianco, Semillon Bianco (Italy); Semijon (Croatia); Merwah (Lebanon); Boal Branco, Boal no Douro, Semilão (Portugal); Greengrape, Wyndruif (South Africa); Semillon Fehér (Hungary). Despite seemingly suggestive synonyms or morphological similarities, it must not be confused with Colombard (Colombier), Crouchen, Malvasia Fina, Palomino, Sercial, Spergola, Trebbiano Toscano (Saint-Émilion).
