Bronner (grape variety)

The white grape variety (breeding no. FR 250-75) is a new variety between Merzling x GM 6494 (see the history of origin there). It contains genes from Vitis amurensis, Vitis lincecumii, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was crossed in 1975 by Norbert Becker (1937-2012) at the State Viticulture Institute in Freiburg. The name was given in honour of the German viticulture pioneer Johann Philipp Bronner (1792-1864). It was granted variety protection in 2003 with the status of a variety of the species Vitis vinifera, which was still a novelty at the time. It should not be confused with the varieties Bronnertraube or Weiße Bronnertraube.
