It borders Germany and the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia and Hungary to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west. More than 70% of the region is mountainous. Viticulture is concentrated in the east of the country, where all the wine-growing areas defined as DAC are located. One speciality is Vienna, where quality viticulture is practised on a large scale.
