A variant of the vine training pergola; see there.

This traditional vine training is a high training system used for wine grapes and especially table grapes. This form was already used in ancient times. The picture below left is from the manual of the Corutti family in Verona around 1375. Horizontal (horizontal or slightly inclined for optimal exposition) devices are installed between wooden, metal or concrete support posts at a height of two to four metres. These are lattice-like wooden frames, horizontal poles or wire frames. The shoots are only pulled on one side (one-armed) or both sides (two-armed). They form a more or less closed canopy, known as a pergola in Italian. High yields can be achieved with this system. All maintenance work must be carried out from below; mechanised work is difficult to achieve.
