Hasel

Common name for vineyards (sites) in Austria. The name goes back to the presence or proximity of hazelnuts (hazelnut bushes). In addition to the two vineyards listed below, there is also one in Bad Pirawarth (Weinviertel).

Straß in Straßertal, Etsdorf and Grafenegg - Kamptal (Lower Austria)

The south-south-west facing vineyard with a slope of up to 23 degrees lies at 230 to 300 metres above sea level and covers 124 hectares of vineyards. In Straß it is divided into Oberhasel, Mitterhasel (centrepiece) and Unterhasel; a sub-vineyard with 11 hectares is called Hasel-Steinbühel. Glacial action (high pressure) has pulverised rocks such as quartz, limestone, mica and clay particles. The loess has an excellent water retention capacity, meaning that the soils hardly suffer from drought. Mainly Grüner Veltliner (105 ha), as well as Müller-Thurgau, Chardonnay,Pinot Blanc, Zweigelt and Pinot Noir are cultivated here. The wineries Allram, Arndorfer, Dolle Peter, Eichinger Birgit, Hiedler Ludwig, Topf Johann, Waldschütz Reinhard, Weixelbaum Heinz and Zottlöderer, for example, have shares in the vineyard.
