The red grape variety is a new breed between Lival x Cardinal, which was confirmed by DNA analyses conducted in 2013. The crossbreeding took place in 1958 in France by the French ampelographer Paul Truel (1924-2014) on behalf of the INRA at the Domaine de Vassal.
