The Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique was founded in France in 1946 under the joint supervision of the Ministries of Research and Agriculture. The main tasks of this public research institution are scientific studies in more than 20 locations concerning agriculture. There is close collaboration with the "École Nationale Supérieur Agronomique" in Montpellier, a branch of the University of Bordeaux. Viticultural research is carried out in Marseillan in the Hérault department (Languedoc) in the "Domaine de Vassal" vineyard herbarium. Further research is carried out at the Pech Rouge vineyards in Gruissan in the Aude department (Languedoc) and at Château Couhins in the commune of Villenave-d'Ornon (Graves), which was bought in 1968.
