The white grape variety originates from Spain. Synonyms are Gibi - 2. Main name (Argentina); Augibi, Jubi Blanc, Lard de Pouerc, Maccabeu à Gros Grains, Panse Blanche, Passerille Blanche, Tercia Blanc (France); Monica Bianca, Mora Bianca, Mora Bianca di Sini, Panse Blanche, Pansale, Panzale (Italy); Mourisco Branco (Portugal); Alzibib, Auzebi, Auzeby, Aparia, Even de Yepes, Gibi, Laco Blanco, Lekel Aneb, Lekhal Aneb, Pansera, Torrontés (Spain).

Origin

This is a very old grape variety. Gabriel Alonso de Herrera (1470-1539) mentioned the grape variety in his work "Obra de Agricultura copilada de diuersos auctores", published in 1513. In Spain, the Hebén variety was described by Rojas Clemente in his Ensayo of 1807. According to an unverifiable hypothesis, it was introduced to Andalusia by the Arabs under the name Alzibib (Zibebe = sultana).

Parentage

The ancestry (parentage) is unknown. It is an all-female grape variety, which is why it is dependent on cross-fertilisation.

Characteristics

The late-maturing vine is slightly susceptible to downy mildew. It produces straw-yellow white wines with floral (acacia, orange and geranium blossom), fruity (lemon, pear, apple, pineapple), spicy, nutty, caramelised (smoke, honey) and vegetal (sage, hay) notes. It is also used as table grape.
