The white grape variety originates from Portugal. Synonyms are Alligator, Babosa, Bourmel, Couche, Dona Branca, Folha de Figo, Malvasia de Porto, Prieto Picudo, Prieto Picudo Blanco and Tortozon. The parentage is unknown. It should not be confused with the varieties Dona Branca, Godello (Prieto Picudo Blanco) or Tamarez (Folha de Figueira) due to some of the same synonyms or morphological similarities. Direct descendants are the varieties Alarije, Albillo de Granada and Merseguera. The variety is threatened with extinction; in 2016, only two hectares of vineyards were designated in Portugal in the Beira Interior area (Kym Anderson statistics).
