The red grape variety originates from Portugal. Synonyms are Alvello Grosso, Brancelho, Cabritella, Castelão, Castella, Castellão, Tinta Castelan, Tinta Castella, Tintra Castellan, Tinta Castelão and Tinta de Castella. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2020, it comes from a presumably natural cross between Hebén x Alvarelhão. It is grown in small quantities in the Centro region. In 2016, 0.1 hectares of vines were reported (Kym Anderson statistics).
