The winery is located in the free city of Rust in Burgenland (Austria). The Freihof dates back to the 15th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The estate is managed by Erich and Claudia Giefing. Erich Giefing ran the award-winning restaurant "Backstube" in Rust and since the mid-1990s has been fully dedicated to wine growing. The vineyards cover 16 hectares of vineyards in the Bandkräftn, Gemärk, Rieglband, Umriss and Wald areas. They are 90% planted with red wine varieties such as Blaufränkisch (50%), Zweigelt, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and St. Laurent, as well as 10% with the white wine varieties Chardonnay, Furmint, Welschriesling, Pinot Gris and Neuburger.
