In 1360, Archbishop Boemund II of Trier (1354-1362) was seriously ill with a fever at Landshut Castle. No medicine helped and all medical treatment was in vain. He was finally cured by drinking two bottles of Bernkasteler wine. As a sign that the wine was "the true doctor", the vineyard was granted the privilege of being called the "Bernkasteler Doctor" by the Elector.
