The Australian viticulture expert Dr Richard E. Smart (*1945) studied agricultural sciences at the University of Sydney. He gained further degrees at Macquarie University with studies on the influence of sunlight in vineyards, and in canopy management at Cornell University (New York State) under Dr Nelson Shaulis (1913-2000). He was awarded a Doctor of Science degree from Stellenbosch University (South Africa) in 1995 in recognition of his achievements in research into the effects of foliage management on yield and quality.
Dr Smart has also published extensively. He is the author of the book "Sunlight in Wine", the author of many articles in specialist journals and the main contributor to the viticulture section of the "Oxford Companion to Wine" (edited by Jancis Robinson). He is regarded as the world's leading expert and global consultant on canopy management and viticultural methods in general and is also known as the "flying vine doctor". Together with Californian vineyard owner John Dyson, he developed the Smart Dyson training system. Two other training systems he developed are Ruakura Twin Two Tier and Te Kauwhata Two Tier. These new systems were subsequently used worldwide, including at the famous Spanish winery Marqués de Griñón.
The Wine lexicon helps me to keep up to date and refresh my knowledge. Thank you for this Lexicon that will never end in terms of topicality! That's what makes it so exciting to come back often.
