Term (canopy mgmt, also leaf canopy or foliage canopy mgmt) for a special cultivation method of grapevines taking into account strictly scientific points of view. The Australian Dr. Richard E. Smart (*1945) is regarded as the worldwide recognised specialist. The name is derived from the fact that many of the measures in the vineyard are related to the foliage of the vines or the foliage care. The foliage plays a decisive role in photosynthesis. Canopy management takes into account the climatic conditions of an individual vine, which can be very different in a vineyard depending on the location (solar radiation, wind currents, proximity of a forest or water body, etc.).
