Ruanda

The Presidential Republic of Rwanda or Rwanda (Kinyarwanda: u Rwanda, Swahili: Jamhuri ya Rwanda) with its capital Kigali in East Africa covers 26,338 km². It borders Burundi to the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north-west, Uganda to the north and Tanzania to the east. Because of its hilly landscape, Rwanda is also known as the "land of a thousand hills". The main African watershed between the catchment areas of the Nile and the Congo runs through the country. From 1884 to 1916, Rwanda was a German colony as part of German East Africa and became independent in 1962.

Ruanda - Landkarte, Flagge und Wappen

The majority of Rwanda is a highland country with an average altitude of 1,500 metres. Despite its proximity to the equator, the tropical climate is therefore rather mild and humid. Due to sufficient rainfall throughout the year and moderate temperatures averaging 18 °Celsius, the conditions for growing grapes and fruit are very good, although there is a risk of fungal infestation. The first trial plantings of vines have been made, for example in Rulindo at an altitude of 2,200 metres using trellis training. There has been a partnership between Rhineland-Palatinate and Rwanda for decades. The Neustadt Wine Campus carried out an analysis of possible viticulture with PIWI grape varieties. In 2023, a related study on the production of table grapes, wine and grape juice was completed with a positive result.
