Rabola

Synonym (also Rabiola) for the grape variety Ribolla Gialla; see there.

The white grape variety originates from the border region of Italy/Slovenia. There are over 50 synonyms, which indicates its great age and wide distribution. The most important are Avola, Erbula, Gargania, Garganica, Rabola, Rabiola, Rebolla, Ribolla Bianca, Ribolla Gialla di Rosazzo, Ribolla di Rosazzo and Ribuèl (Italy); Jarbola, Jerbula, Ribola Bijela (Croatia); Garganija, Garganja, Grganc, Rebula, Rebula Bela, Teran Bijeli, Zelena Rebula (Slovenia).

Origin

According to one hypothesis, it is a descendant of the famous Pucinum mentioned by Pliny the Elder (23-79). The variety was already mentioned in Friuli in 1296 in connection with the sale of a Rabola wine, in which Pope Boniface VIII (1235-1303) was also involved. A ban issued by the city of Udine in 1402 against the adulteration of the vine testifies...
