In the case of a new breeding of grape varieties, the parents are indicated in the form of "New variety = mother variety x father variety". The mother variety is the first named grape variety, for example "Zweigelt = St. Laurent (mother) x Blaufränkisch (father)". As a rule, the characteristics of the mother variety prevail more strongly. See also under crossing direction and crossing.
