Katogi Averoff

The winery is located in the municipality of Metsovo, in the wine-growing region of the same name in the Epirus region of Greece. It was founded in 1959 by Evangelos Averoff-Tosistas (1910-1990). As Averoff served in Greece as Foreign Minister from 1956 to 1963 and as Defence Minister from 1974 to 1981, he was only able to devote little time to the winery. The winery therefore operated as a non-profit organisation for many years. In 2001, a merger took place with the Strofilia winery; however, the two remained independent. This cooperation was amicably terminated in 2017.

The vineyards in Metsovo are located in a brown bear habitat and cover 15 hectares of vines on the slopes of Mount Pindus at 950 to 1050 metres above sea level. They are among the highest in Greece. There are further areas in Nemea and Naoussa. The red wine varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Vlachiko, Xinomavro, Negoska and Tannat are cultivated, as well as the white wine varieties Chardonnay, Traminer, Roditis and Assyrtiko. The Cabernet Sauvignon variety was already introduced by Evangelos Averoff and blended with the autochthonous Agiorgitiko. The red wine was the first cuvée in Greece with an international and a Greek grape variety. Today, however, it is blended from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and ages for 12 months in French and American oak barrels.
