The red grape variety originates from Spain. Synonyms are Espero de Gall and l'Esperó de Gall. The name refers to the shape of the grapes. Esperó de Gall is also a synonym for the white grape variety Godello (Gouveio). According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, the Epero de Gall variety is probably a natural cross between Hebén x Monastrell. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). It is grown in small quantities on the Balearic capital Mallorca. However, no stock was reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson).
