This white grape variety originates from Spain. According to a text dating from 1636, the German Peter Siemens, whilst serving as a soldier under Emperor Charles V (1500–1558), planted a vine originating from the banks of the Rhine in Málaga; this is said to have been the Elbling or ‘ Riesling ’ variety.
