Famous wine-growing community (also Terminen or Termenon, in Valais German Tärbinu) at the entrance to the front Visp Valley in the Swiss canton of Valais. The name is of Latin origin and means "border (neighbourhood) of Visp". The village was first mentioned around 1199 as "Villa Termenuns" near Visp. The south-facing vineyards are split into several areas and cover a total of 55 hectares of vines.
They extend from the banks of the Vispa from 660 metres above sea level in terraces with high dry stone walls up to over 1,100 metres. This makes the vineyards some of the highest and, due to their extreme inclination, some of the steepest vineyards in Europe. The dry climate and the heat-retaining walls create a thermal chamber. Well-known wines include Heida made from Savagnin Blanc (Traminer), the red wine Dôle, mostly made from Pinot Noir or Gamay , as well as the white wines Fendant(Chasselas) and Johannisberg (Silvaner).
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
