Santameriana

The white grape variety originates from Greece. Synonyms are Asprouda Patron, Asprouda Patras and Asprouda of Patras. Its parentage is unknown. It is grown exclusively in the eponymous municipality of Santameri in the Patras area (Achaia) on the north coast of the Greek Peloponnese peninsula. In the middle of the 19th century, phylloxera destroyed almost the entire ungrafted vine population of the municipality. The areas were replanted with Roditis and Mavrodaphne and only a few vines of the variety remained.

After finding 10 vines, winemaker Panos Dimitropoulos planted a 1.3 hectare vineyard at 600 metres above sea level with 4,000 vines on his biodynamically(DEMETER) managed Sant'Or vineyard. The low-yielding, late-ripening variety with thin-skinned, golden-yellow berries produces fruity white wines with flavours of peach, pear, honey and white flowers, which are vinified by the winery as single-varietal wines ( PGI-Peleponnes country wine).
