Area classified as Cru (peak appellation) in the northern section of the Rhône on the right bank. It extends for 50 kilometres from Condrieu in the north to Saint-Péray in the south. The vineyards cover some 900 hectares of vines in 26 communes in the two departments of Ardèche and Loire. The centre of Saint-Joseph is the town of Tournon, situated on the banks of the Rhône opposite the Hermitage mountain. The wine was already appreciated by the French kings in the 16th century. It was also one of the favourite wines of the French writer Victor Hugo (1802-1885), creator of the novel "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame". The red wine is made from Syrah with a maximum of 10% of the two white varieties Marsanne and Roussanne and the white wine from the varieties Roussanne and Marsanne. The wines are similar to those of the Hermitage appellation. Well-known producers are Chapoutier, Domaine Jean-Louis Chave, Pierre Coursodon, Yves Cuilleron, Delas Frères, Philippe Faury, Pierre Gaillard, Bernard Gripa, Jean-Louis Grippat, Jaboulet-Aîné, Vincent Paris and Tardieu-Laurent.
