Marquette

The red grape variety (also MN 1211) is an interspecific new variety between MN 1094 (MN 1019) x MN 1016) x Ravat 262 (Ravat Noir). It contains genes from Vitis aestivalis, Vitis berlandieri, Vitis cinerea, Vitis labrusca, Vitis lincecumii, Vitis riparia, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was crossed in 1989 by Peter Hemstad and James Luby at the University of Minnesota in Excelsior. It was named after the French Jesuit priest and explorer Jacques Marquette (1637-1675), who founded the first European settlement in Michigan in 1668. The early to medium ripening vine is resistant to frost down to minus 34 °Celsius, as well as to both types of mildew and black rot. It produces red wines with high acidity and tannins, with aromas of cherries, currants and pepper. The variety is grown on 44 hectares in Canada and on a total of 122 hectares in the USA in the states of Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota and Pennsylvania, among others. In 2016, a total of 166 hectares of vines were reported (Kym Anderson statistics).
