The term (from the Latin crescentia = growth) can have several meanings. In agriculture and viticulture, it used to be used as a synonym for grape variety, yield or also for the indication of origin for wines. Above all, however, it used to be a legal term for a naturally pure wine. During production, the grape must must not have been enriched with sugar (to increase alcohol). In Germany (since the wine law amendment of 1971) and Austria, however, the name is no longer officially permitted in wine law terms.
However, the term Kreszenz is still used colloquially for high-quality premium wines of noble origin. In terms of meaning, Kreszenz is related to the French Cru (Gewächs) or Grand Cru.
