Cornifesto

The red grape variety originates from Portugal. Synonyms are Cornifeito, Cornifesta, Cornifesto no Dão, Cornifesto Tinto, Cornifresco, Gajo Arroba and Tinta Bastardeira. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, it is probably a natural cross between Cayetana Blanca x Alfrocheiro. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see Molecular Genetics). It should not be confused with its sibling varieties (see Cayetana Blanca). The variety is a parent of Tinta Valdosa, which was created by natural crossing. The medium-maturing vine is susceptible to powdery and downy mildew as well as botrytis. It produces dark-coloured, floral red wines with moderate alcohol content and red fruit aromas. The variety is mainly cultivated in the Douro area and is also one of the less important varieties for port wine here. The area under cultivation in Portugal is 508 hectares. There are also small stocks in Spain, Australia and South Africa (1 ha). In 2016, a total of 509 hectares of vines were reported (Kym Anderson statistics).
