The red grape variety comes from Portugal. Synonyms are Cornifeito, Cornifesta, Cornifesto no Dão, Cornifesto Tinto, Cornifresco, Gajo Arroba and Tinta Bastardeira. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, this is a presumably natural cross between Cayetana Blanca x Alfrocheiro. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). It must not be confused with its siblings (see Cayetana Blanca). The medium ripening vine is susceptible to powdery and downy mildew and botrytis. It produces dark-coloured, flowery red wines with moderate alcohol content and red fruit aromas. The variety is mainly grown in the Douro area, where it is also one of the less important varieties for port wine. The cultivated area in Portugal is 508 hectares. Small stocks also exist in Spain, Australia and South Africa (1 ha). In 2016, a total of 509 hectares of vineyards were designated (Kym Anderson)
