The Kingdom of Cambodia (khmer ព្រះរាជាណាចក្រកម្ពុជា, Preăh Réachéanachâkr Kâmpŭchéa) in Southeast Asia with the capital Phnom Penh covers 181,040 km². It is located on the Indochinese Peninsula, on the Gulf of Thailand between Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. In 1863, Cambodia came under French rule and later became part of French Indochina. After years of civil war, the Khmer Rouge established a reign of terror in 1975. The monarchy was finally restored in 1993 with a new constitution.

Viticulture

The uniformly warm and humid tropical climate is divided into two seasons by the monsoon. From November to March, continental north-easterly winds bring about the somewhat cooler dry season. April to October is the rainy season. The favoured alcoholic beverages are beers, palm wine and the distilled arrack as well as sweet, strong rice wines. Viticulture is also practised on a very small scale. In the north-west province of Battambang, there is the only vineyard called Prasat Banan with only 10 hectares of vines.
