In a broader sense, the term Indochina describes the mainland areas of Southeast Asia, south of China and east of the Indian subcontinent. This expresses the formative cultural influence of India and China on the peoples and countries of continental Southeast Asia in contrast to the front and back Indies. In the political sense, Indochina encompassed the territories of the present-day countries of Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, which were incorporated into the French colonial empire from 1887 as the "Union Indochinoise" (French Indochina). In geography, the term is retained as the name for the Indochinese peninsula. There is little viticulture in the countries.
