In Germany, this is the usual term for the official register of vineyard sites, in which officially recognised units of land used for viticulture are registered cartographically and described with regard to their boundaries, geology, climate and grape variety composition. Only registered cadastral sites, single vineyards and large vine yards may be used to indicate the protected origin on the label for quality wines(PD O). See also under vineyard area.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
