single vineyard

Designation (also Lage) for the second smallest vineyard unit in Germany as the geographically protected origin of a wine. Single vineyard designations are prescribed for all German wine-growing areas. Since 2014, it has been possible to have smaller areas within a single vineyard, which can also be cross-locational, entered in the vineyard register as a cadastral site (smallest area unit), which is also used by individual wineries. Although it is not obligatory to indicate the single vineyard on the label, it is relatively common in Germany for quality wines. The next larger units of area are Großlage (usually with several single vineyards), Bereich (with one or several large vineyards) and Anbaugebiet (with one or several areas). The picture shows Trittenheim in the Mosel growing region in the Bernkastel area with the four single vineyard sites Altärchen, Apotheke, Felsenkopf and Leiterchen in the Großlage Michelsberg.

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
