Designation (also site) for the second smallest wine-growing unit in Germany as the geographically protected origin of a wine. Single vineyard designations are prescribed for all German wine-growing areas. Since 2014, it has been possible to have smaller areas within a single vineyard, which can also span multiple vineyard sites, entered in the vineyard register as a cadastral site (smallest area unit), which is also utilised.

The picture shows Johannisberg Castle in the Rheingau. Charlemagne (742-814) is said to have had a vineyard planted on Johannisberg for the first time. Between 1096 and 1100, Benedictine monks built a monastery on the Bischofsberg plateau above the village of Johannisberg, planted vines and cultivated wine.
