The white grape variety originates either from France or from Spain. Synonyms grouped alphabetically by country are Malvoisie des Pyrénées-Orientales, Malvoisie du Roussillon, Malvoisie Tourbat, Torbat, Tourbat, Turbat (France); Canina, Caninu, Cuscosedda Bianca, Torbato Bianco, Uva Catalana (Italy). It should not be confused with the Mauzac Blanc variety due to morphological similarities. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, it originates from a presumably natural cross between Hebén x unknown partner. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). Despite the Spanish parent, it no longer plays a role in this country or there are no stocks there.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
