The red grape variety comes from Portugal. Synonyms are Barca and Tinta Barca. It must not be confused with Mourisco de Semente (with synonym Tinta de Barca) or Touriga Franca (with synonym Tinta Barca) because of apparent synonyms or morphological similarities. According to DNA analyses last carried out in 2020, this is a (presumably natural) cross between Marufo x Touriga Nacional. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). The variety is grown almost exclusively in the Trás-os-Montes area and, on a few hectares, also in the Douro area. In 2016, 352 hectares of vineyard area were designated (statistics Kym Anderson).
