Tinta da Barca

The red grape variety (also Barca) comes from Portugal. It must not be confused with the Mourisco de Semente (with synonym Tinta de Barca) or Touriga Franca (with synonym Tinta Barca). According to DNA analyses carried out in 2012, it is a (presumably natural) cross between Marufo x Touriga Nacional. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). The variety is grown almost exclusively in the Trás-os-Montes area and, on a few hectares, also in the Douro area. In 2010, 345 hectares of vineyards were designated.
