The red grape variety comes from Portugal. Synonyms are Albino de Sousa, Albino de Souza, Mourisco, Mourisco de Braga and Tinta de Barca. It must not be confused with Touriga Franca (with synonym Albino de Souza) or Tinta da Barca because of apparent synonyms or morphological similarities. According to the latest DNA analyses carried out in 2020, it is a cross between Marufo x Borraçal. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). The variety is mainly cultivated in the Trás-os-Montes area and, on a few hectares, also in the Beira Interior area. In 2016, 60 hectares of vineyards were designated (Kym Anderson).
