The red grape variety originates from Portugal. Synonyms are Albino de Sousa, Albino de Souza, Mourisco, Mourisco de Braga and Tinta de Barca. It should not be confused with Touriga Franca (with synonym Albino de Souza) or Tinta da Bar ca due to seemingly suggestive synonyms or morphological similarities. According to DNA analyses last carried out in 2020, it is a cross between Marufo x Borraçal. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). The variety is mainly cultivated in the Trás-os-Montes area and on a few hectares also in the Beira Interior area. In 2016, 61 hectares of vines were designated (Kym Anderson).
