Solvent tone

Collective term for various wine defects with similar causes, symptoms and effects. They are also known as pharmacy taint, chemical taint, medicinal taint, nail varnish taint or pharmaceutical taint. This is characterised by a distinctive smell and taste of solvents such as acetone, ethyl acetate, isopropanol and methyl ethyl ketone. These colourless, highly flammable liquids are used as solvents or thinners for many paints, varnishes and resins, as well as nail polish removers. They are characterised by a similar, pungent, sweet and aromatic odour to varying degrees. In addition, all the solvents mentioned have a direct or indirect chemical relationship to acetic acid.
