Term for the mostly unpleasant smell and taste of a wine in the context of a wine toast. The spectrum includes petrol, diesel, rubber, paraffin, garlic, cabbage, mercaptan (thiols), tar, petroleum, plastic, sulphur and soap. The description, which usually has negative connotations, indicates various wine defects. See filter t aint, solvent taint, styrene taint and uhuton.
