The red grape variety probably originates from Sicily(Italy). Synonyms are Barbe du Sultan, Carricante Nero, Nerelli, Nicera, Nocera di Catania, Nocera Mantonico, Nocera Nera di Milazzo, Nucera and Nucera Niura.

According to an unverifiable hypothesis, this vine could be a descendant of the ancient variety from which the ancient Mamertinum wine mentioned by Pliny the Elder (23-79) was made.
The parentage is unknown. It should not be confused with the Magliocco Canino or Magliocco Dolce varieties due to some of the same synonyms or morphological similarities. It is not a colour mutation of the white variety Carricante (with the synonym Nocera Bianca). The Nocera variety was a crossing partner of the new varieties Christmas Rose and Red Globe.

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
