Nocera

The red grape variety probably originates from Sicily(Italy). Synonyms are Barbe du Sultan, Carricante Nero, Nerelli, Nicera, Nocera di Catania, Nocera Mantonico, Nocera Nera di Milazzo, Nucera and Nucera Niura. It must not be confused with the varieties Magliocco Canino or Magliocco Dolce, despite seemingly suggestive synonyms or morphological similarities. It is not a colour mutation of the white variety Carricante (Nocera Bianca). According to unverifiable hypothesis, it is supposed to be a descendant of the Mamertinum mentioned by Pliny the Elder (23-79). The parentage (parentage) is unknown. It was a crossing partner of the new varieties Christmas Rose and Red Globe.
