The red grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Magliocco Ovale, Maglioccolone and Magliuacculu. The name "Magliocco" was already mentioned at the end of the 15th century, but several grape varieties were labelled with it.

The parentage is unknown (ex VIVC catalogue). It should not be confused with Castiglione, Gaglioppo, Magliocco Dolce, Nerello Mascalese or Nocera due to partly identical synonyms or morphological similarities. There is a parent-offspring relationship with Calabrese di Montenuovo (ex Wine Grapes).
