The red grape variety is an interspecific new variety between Seyve-Villard 12-286 x Merlot (Merlau is also an old synonym for Merlot). It contains genes from Vitis berlandieri, Vitis labrusca, Vitis lincecumii, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera. The crossing of the hybrids was done in 1996 in Gols (Burgenland, Austria) by the private breeders Dr. Gertrude Mayer and Georg Paul Weiss. In 2016 no stocks were reported (Kym Anderson).
