Cariñena (grape variety)

A synonym (also known as Cariñena Mazuela or Carinyena) for the Mazuelo grape variety; see the entry for that variety.

This red grape variety originates from Spain. There are well over 100 synonyms, which attest to its long history and widespread distribution. The most important ones, grouped alphabetically by country, are Carignan, Carignane, Carignan Noir, Grenache du Bois, Pinot d’Evora, Plant de Ledenon, Roussillonen (France); Bovale di Spagna, Bovale Grande, Bovale Grande di Spagna, Bovale Grosso, Bovale Mannu, Carignano, Tintiglia, Uva di Spagna (Italy, Sardinia); Carignane, Kerrigan (California); Carinhana (Portugal); Cariñano, Cariñena, Cariñena Mazuela, Carinyena, Catalan, Concejón, Corcejon, Crujillón, Mazuela, Mollard, Samsó, Samsó Crusillo, Tinto Mazuela, Tintilia, Tintillosa, Zinzillosa (Spain).

Origin

According to an unverifiable hypothesis, the Mazuelo (or Carignano) variety was introduced to Sardinia by the Phoenicians as early as the 9th century BC. However, this very old variety probably originates from Aragon. From there, it spread throughout Europe from the 12th century onwards. The main name ‘Mazuelo’ is derived from the municipality of Mazuelo de Muñó in the province of Burgos, in the neighbouring region of Castile and León.

The synonym Cariñena presumably refers to the town of the same name near Zaragoza in Aragon. This has become Carignan (Noir) in France and Carignano in Italy. The name Cariñena was formerly in use in Catalonia. However,...
