Wine-growing area (district) at the southern tip of South Africa, which is part of the Cape South Coast region. The eponymous Cape is the southernmost point of the country and the continent and marks the border between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans (this is often incorrectly attributed to Cape Point ). It is a very young wine-growing region, as until the mid-1990s it was mainly sheep farming and grain cultivation. Most of the vineyards by the sea are located in the single Ward Elim. The village of Elim, founded in 1824 as a missionary settlement of the Brethren Church, is now one of South Africa's national monuments. In summer, strong, cooling winds prevail and ensure a very cool ripening period. These are ideal conditions for Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Sémillon, Pinot Noir and Shiraz (Syrah). Well-known producers include Hidden Valley, Lomond, Quoin Rock and Strandveld.
I have great respect for the scope and quality of the wein.plus encyclopaedia. It is a unique place to go for crisp, sound information on terms from the world of wine.
