Cape Point

District south of Cape Town in South Africa, which belongs to the Coastal Region. It is named after the cliff of the same name at the southern end of the Cape Peninsula and lies about one kilometre east of the Cape of Good Hope, with which it is often confused (the southernmost point of South Africa, however, is Cape Agulhas, which lies 200 kilometres southeast and after which a district is also named). There is no Ward. The vineyards stretch along the coast like a mosaic, some are barely a kilometre from the Atlantic coast. The climate is positively influenced by cooling sea breezes. This is well suited for the white wine varieties Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Chardonnay, as well as for the red wine varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Pinot Noir. Well-known producers are Cape Point Vineyards (owned by Sybrand van der Spuy, who achieved recognition as a WO area in 1998), Noordhoek, Scarborough and Two Oceans Vineyards (name is actually incorrect, as the Indian Ocean only begins at Cape Agulhas).
