The red grape variety originates from Georgia. Synonyms are Aleksandrouli Shavi, Aleksandrouly, Alexandrouli and Kabistoni. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2009, it is not a colour mutation of the white variety Kapistoni Tetri (with synonym Kabistoni Tetri). The late-ripening vine has berries with a balanced sugar and acid content. It produces fragrant red wines with aromas of cherry and pomegranate. Together with the Mujuretuli variety, the PDO wine Khvanchkara is blended, the favourite wine of Josef Stalin (1878-1953). The variety is mainly grown in the northwestern region of Racha-Lechkhumi. In 2016, 281 hectares of vineyards were designated (Kym Anderson).
