Abbreviation (also known as wine PDO) for "protected designation of origin", a quality level that has been in force since August 2009 due to the EU wine market regulation. Instead, however, the traditional designations "Qualitätswein" and "Prädikatswein" are still used in Germany and Austria. See the Quality System section.
