Khvanchkara

The PDO area (also known as Khvanchkara) is located in the Racha-Lechkhumi region of Georgia. It extends at 450 to 500 metres above sea level on the southern slopes of the Rioni Valley with the municipality of Khvanchkara and a further 25 municipalities. The medium sweet red wine is blended from Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli and has a velvety flavour. It was first produced in 1907 and is particularly popular for historical reasons. It became popular during the Soviet era because Joseph Stalin (1878-1953) declared it his favourite wine. At the Yalta Conference in February 1945, Stalin had this wine presented to US President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945) and the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (1874-1965). The rights to the name Khvanchkara were acquired by the US beverage company "Dozortsev & Sons" (New Jersey), which distributes Georgian wines worldwide.
