The production of wines, sparkling wines and spirits is governed by corresponding EU regulations and, where applicable, by supplementary national wine legislation (see winemaking). All origin-protected products are regulated in wine labelling law (e.g. Tokay, Champagne and Cognac). In addition, there are many other alcoholic beverages with imaginative names. However, most of the names listed below do not have a legal meaning under wine law, but only a localised or colloquial meaning and are usually not allowed to appear on a bottle label for consumer protection reasons.
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
