Sparkling wine closure

The classic closure for sparkling wine(champagne, sparkling wine) is a special, mushroom-shaped cork, which has a larger volume/diameter than that for still wines due to the high carbon dioxide pressure. The cork is secured by means of an agraffe. The small metal capsules attached to the cork are a sought-after collector's item for fans of placomusophilia. The ALCAN company developed a special closure called MAESTRO with the champagne house Duval-Leroy. According to EU regulations, it was obligatory to apply a protective foil made of mostly tin foil (aluminium) over the cork, capsule, agraffe and bottle neck. This is no longer required since December 2023 (see under Sparkling Wine Bottle).
