Still wine

vin tranquille (F)
still wine (GB)
vino tranquillo, vino quieto, fermo (I)

Colloquial term for a wine to distinguish it from a "lively" sparkling wine(sparkling wine, champagne). It contains no or very little carbon dioxide (still = not sparkling). The name has no meaning in terms of wine law. It is not permitted on the label under EU law because under wine labelling law a false or misleading association with "wine for a nursing mother" could be awakened (see Health). Complete lists of the numerous, different types of wine are listed under the keywords vinification and special wines.
