Term (still = not sparkling or sparkling) for a wine to distinguish it from a "lively" sparkling wine (cava, champagne, sparkling wine, spumante). Internationally, the terms still wine, quiet wine or vin tranquille are commonly used. In German, the term is often simply understood to mean "normal wine". A still wine contains no or very little carbon dioxide. The decisive factor is that the carbon dioxide pressure at 20 °Celsius is below 0.5 bar, which corresponds to a content of less than around 1 gram of CO₂ per litre.

Legal significance for wine

This can be a white wine, red wine or rosé wine. However, the term has no meaning under wine law. It is not permitted on the label under EU law because, according to wine labelling law, it could create a false or misleading association with "wine for a nursing mother" (see Health).
