Term used in Germany and Austria (also Nikolauswein) for a wine whose grapes were harvested on 6 December, the eponymous St. Nicholas' Day. Naturally, this is mostly an ice wine or a Trockenbeerenauslese. In Austria, Nikolowein or Nikololese is an official designation under wine law. It may be used here if the harvest date is noted on the label. Sensuously similar wines are Christwein, Dreikönigswein, Leopoldiwein, Martiniwein, Stefaniwein and Weihnachtswein. The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
